About Us

It’s ALL in the name!

Carew Dental Limited was founded by our principal dentist, Melbourne Carew, and his wife, Joanna. We are so proud of the reputation Melbourne has built over the past 16 years that we named our new practice after him!

Our Ethos

The ethos at Carew Dental is simple: to offer exceptional cosmetic, implant and general dentistry in a luxurious, stress-free environment.

We are also immensely proud of the relationships we build with our patients, focussing on your experience throughout your treatment journey. We believe visits to the dentist should not be stressful and we enjoy working with you every step of the way to ensure you feel comfortable, receive outstanding treatments, and just love your smile.

We also recognise that traditional weekday appointments are not convenient for everybody, so we have a flexible appointment schedule that includes evenings and weekends.

Our Location

We can't wait to see you

Our practice is conveniently located just off the A1 on the Team Valley Trading Estate in Gateshead (NE11 0JU).

Our main client-base is from around the North East, but there are no geographical restrictions on who we can treat. In fact, because of Melbourne’s reputation for outstanding cosmetic and implant dentistry we regularly welcome patients from across the UK and beyond.

When you arrive at Carew Dental, you’ll find a large patient car park as well as a fabulous patient lounge with complimentary drinks, free Wi-Fi, magazines, sofas and even a laptop workstation.

Melbourne absolutely loves his profession! In addition to practising dentistry and developing specialist interests such as implantology, Melbourne is involved in the research of patient experience and is currently working with Newcastle University, sponsored by the National Institute of Health Research, to find new innovative ways of using technology to improve patient understanding of treatments.

When Melbourne is not practising dentistry, you will find him cooking a delicious elaborate meal, or hooked to a rugby match or Formula One. He’s also dad – and stepdad – to three children, and loves getting out and about walking in the beautiful Northumberland countryside with the kids and two dogs in tow.

Joanna Carew, Managing Director

Joanna is Melbourne’s wife and has a non-dental background. She runs all non-clinical aspects of Carew Dental and works at the practice full time. Joanna has extensive hospitality and retail experience, and she brings these experiences into the practice to create a stress-free environment within the practice, and to ensure patients enjoy their whole experience at Carew Dental.

In addition to previously running her own businesses, Joanna has spent the past 5-years studying BSc Rural Studies at Newcastle University and two postgraduate diplomas in law at Northumbria University but diverted from her legal training to devote herself full time to Carew Dental. Joanna has thrived on the challenge of developing the business into a truly patient-focussed practice and absolutely loves her role as Managing Director!

Away from the practice Joanna is a true country girl and lives with Melbourne and their family in a small village in the Tyne Valley. Away from the practice you will almost always find Joanna out of doors, hiking in the hills, hacking out on horseback, or chilling with a glass of wine at the local pub!

Lindsey McCann, Hygienist/Therapist

Lindsey (GDC 201983) graduated from Newcastle University in 2018 with a distinction in Clinical and Academic Dentistry, winning a prize for professionalism, and becoming a qualified hygienist/therapist. Originally from Northern Ireland, Lindsey moved to Newcastle to study and decided to stay in the North East to practice. Prior to qualifying as a hygienist/therapist Lindsey worked as a dental nurse, and she brings over a decade of dentistry experience to the role. You can find examples of Lindsey’s work on instagram @irishhygienist.

Outside of work Lindsey likes to keep fit and enjoys gym classes. Lindsey’s favourite holiday destination is Ibiza where she relaxes on yoga retreats.

Nikki Dunville, Dental Nurse

Nikki (GDC 169585) has worked in the dental industry since 2005 and has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in that time. Nikki enjoys nursing for all types of treatment; however, she also relishes the challenge of assisting with creating policies and procedures to facilitate the smooth running of the dental practice.

Outside of work Nikki enjoys partaking in recreational activities with her husband and young son, usually involving outdoor walks, parks and seaside adventures with their dog Vera.

Carlee Barrett, Apprentice Dental Nurse

Carlee joined us in September 2022 as an apprentice dental nurse and is at the very start of her dental career. Carlee shares her working hours between studying and learning practical skills, so you will encounter her in around the practice and in surgery. In her free time Carlee enjoys singing and playing the guitar, or getting out and about with her two Labradors Molly and Jet. Another passion for Carlee is watching Formula 1, so together with Melbourne and Alfie we definitely have a growing Formula 1 fan club at Carew Dental!

Alfie Thirkettle, Dental Receptionist

Alfie is the eldest of the three Carew-Thirkettle children and he works part time at Carew Dental as a dental assistant. This means he divides his time between reception, administrative duties and also provides assistance in the clinical areas. In addition to working at the practice, Alfie is currently studying philosophy at Newcastle University. Alfie has always been interested in sciences and human medicine and completed Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics A-Levels before starting University.

Alfie is an avid Formula One fan and he loves to watch the races and follow all the developments on and off the track throughout the season. He also spends his spare time going out with his friends, but Alfie’s hidden talent has to be his outstanding cookery skills. He is a genius in the kitchen and regularly woos us with incredible, technical, delicious 5-course meals!

Sophie Scott, Dental Receptionist

Sophie has a non-dental background and works at the practice as a full time dental receptionist. Sophie has over 12 years in hospitality and customer service experience, including, 7 years travelling the world onboard 5* luxury cruise liners.

Outside of the practice Sophie is a very active and adventurous person and will soon receive her qualification for gym instructing/personal training. In her free time you will find Sophie on a hike with her boyfriend, on walks with her dog and family, at the park with her God-children, watching a football game, or winding down with her girlfriends and a nice glass of chilled Prosecco.
